Datsun unveiled their first Indian product a hatchback which they christened as GO couple of months ago.The Sketches which were revealed earlier clearly showed that the new hatchback looks aggressive and stylish as well, and when it was finally unveiled it looked almost same as it was highlighted in the sketch. Datsun is all set to launch the GO on 19th March to compete against the other small car manufacturers of India like the Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai which are already present in the Indian market for quite some now. Datsun GO Design
One glance at the car and you will know that the GO is a fairly large hatchback. Based on the same V-platform as the Micra, the GO is longer, yet marginally narrower than its Nissan sibling. The styling is contemporary. Hexagonal grilles are the flavor of the season, but the Datsun grille has enough flair to stand out in the crowd. The chrome garnish isn’t too flashy and gels very well with the honeycomb type mesh design of the grille. The angular styling cues are seen in the headlamps and the air-dams as well.The side profile has four prominent creases. The shoulder line originates from the headlamps. A buttress flows over the rear door handle and cuts into the taillights. A crease runs from the front wheel arch into the tailgate. A crease at the lower part of the bodywork runs along the length of the doors and disappears into the rear wheel arch.While all these can make you perceive the design to be busy, it is not. The creases are subtle and are noticeable only when observed closely. The colour of choice also has a big part to play in this regard as the creases tend to disappear on a lighter shade. The 13-inch wheels with the 155/70 section tyres look a tad tiny for the Datsun GO.The tailgate looks smart and the buttresses we spoke of, look better from the hindquarter. The loading lip for the boot-lid is high and therefore, easily accessible. The taillights are squarish and the wrap around effect looks good.
Datsun GO Cabin
Get inside the Datsun GO+ and the first two rows are exactly the same as the GO. The fit and finish is good and plastic quality is decent. In the top-of-the-line variant “T”, the GO+ gets front power windows, mobile docking station connected to two speakers, electric power steering and air-con. If your smartphone is larger than 5.2-inches then the docking station cannot hold it. All the three rows have fixed headrest. In terms of features it misses out on basic things like rear wiper and maybe even rear defogger for improved rear visibility in monsoon and winters. The A variant doesn’t get the mobile docking station, or power windows or the electric power steering also.
The first row is spacious and it has a bench-like seat, for storage of excess luggage next to the driver and the co-driver. Some believe that three people can sit in the front row, but that isn’t the case, as the gear lever will make seating uncomfortable. The second row has generous headroom, but knee room is just fine for tall people. The thigh support too could have been better, but this is one of the best in its segment.The third row is strictly for kids, and even Datsun calls this as a 5+2. There is barely any head room, knee room or should room for adults. With the third row raised, the boot size is a mere 48 litres and when the seats are flipped the space is 347 litres. One can even flip the second row of seats and further increase the loading space. With the third row of seats folded our entire tenting luggage fitted with ease.
Datsun GO Performance
With a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol motor already doing duty in the Micra and Micra Active, Nissan didn’t have to look too far for an engine. In brief, it’s an all-aluminium unit that produces 67bhp at 5,000rpm. And with just 788kg to hurl around, it does a rather impressive job of giving the Go some real go. A bit of hesitation at low revs apart, the Datsun feels very peppy at typical city speeds and it responds well to light throttle inputs. You can also pull away from low engine speeds in higher gears with ease, which means fewer gearshifts. Part of the credit for this goes to the smartly chosen (if slightly tall) gear ratios. Interestingly, the Go doesn’t use the Micra’s Renault-sourced gearbox (code: JH), because it was too expensive. Instead, Nissan has dusted off an older five-speed unit (code: FY) and pressed it into service here. This is not the most modern of gearboxes and there’s a noticeable whine at all times. The gearshift is slightly notchy too, but doesn’t require much effort. Neither does the clutch, which is light and progressive. The mid range and top end of this motor are the best bits, with power flowing seamlessly and never leaving you wanting for more. There’s a delightful little surge every time you floor the throttle in the meat of the revband. The engine does get noisy after 4,000rpm, but never to point of feeling strained or harsh. That’s probably because Nissan has fixed the rev limiter at a rather low 5,250rpm in the interest of fuel economy, so you’ll often find yourself maxing the car in each gear earlier than you’d expect.
Datsun GO Driving
The speed-sensitive power steering system enables easy Datsun GO handling. Though the steering can be a bit heavy as compared to the Hyundai vehicles, there is no compromise on the convenience factor. The 13-inch tubeless tyres enhance the Datsun GO performance levels a great deal. The Macpherson struts for the front wheels make riding over the toughest roads quite easy. The ground clearance is 170 mm thereby allowing it comfortable leeway whereas the turning radius of 4.6 metres makes the Datsun GO an easily manoeuvrable vehicle.
Datsun GO Safety
Having set its price range in the most economical band, it is natural that you should not expect all the safety features in the Datsun GO. The vehicle does have disc brakes on the front wheel but lacks the auto braking system. Hence, experiencing wheel lock-ups especially when you brake hard is common. Though the car might tend to change its direction a bit during this procedure, it still manages to feel stable at high speeds. The suspension can make the car feel a bit bouncy on the uneven roads. As far as the overall Datsun Braking and Safety is concerned, you have seat belts for all the passengers. It can be difficult to imagine Nissan providingairbags at this pricing level. Some of the important Datsun GO features are the engine immobiliser, child locks, and the manual central locking system.

Datsun GO Conclussion
Our initial stint with the Datsun GO has impressed us. The car has a lot going for it. While most vehicles in this segment offer a compromised product, Nissan has given first time car buyers a genuinely good alternative although cost cutting is glaringly evident in many places. The GO not only ticks the right boxes when it comes to important criterias like space, comfort, ride quality, efficiency and affordability, it is also appealing and not obnoxiously shaped like some of its rivals. The 2-year/unlimited mileage warranty is just the cherry on the GO (no pun intended) and as ironic as it may sound, the GO’s chief rival has its name in its tagline. Nissan is serious about the Indian market and with its solo journey commenced for sales and service, the Datsun GO is undoubtedly one of the best cars for the first time car buyer.
